In December 2019, the European Commission presented the European Green Deal with the ambition of making Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050, boosting the economy, improving people's health and quality of life, caring for nature, and leaving no one behind.

Digitalisation will be at the core of this ambitious program and fibre is key to align the digital and sustainability agendas. As the most sustainable telecommunication infrastructure technology, full-fibre is a prerequisite to achieving the European Green Deal and making the European Union’s economy more sustainable.

The need to work collectively towards a more sustainable society has become a strategic objective of policy makers and the vast majority of private organisations alike. With this context in mind, the sustainability Working Group of the FTTH Council Europe has been created with two key objectives:

  • Promote full fibre as the most sustainable access network technology and enabler of multiple applications which can contribute to reducing the carbon footprint of our activities. Remote working and learning being the most obvious examples.
  • Support all stakeholders of the Fibre to the Home value chain in their efforts to make their respective activities more carbon neutral.

Biography:

Maarten Egmond has been contributing to technology and product development in the FTTH industry for almost 20 years, currently serving as CTO of Genexis, as chair of the In-home Broadband Excellence committee of the FTTH Council Europe and participating in the European Commission's Code of Conduct on Energy Consumption of Broadband Equipment. His background originally is in Information Technology as well as Applied Physics and before diving into FTTH, started his career in R&D of optical components for long-haul networks.

Position Statement:

I have been leading the IBE effort since the start of the committee, and by now can show a proven track record of operating in an open and unbiased manner. If re-elected, I will continue to welcome any contribution that helps the objectives of the committee forward, and contribute content of my own in the various areas the committee touches upon.

Your past role(s) and activities in the FTTH Council Europe:

Committee chair of In-home Broadband Excellence; Workshops and panel discussions related to this topic; Worked in the background to assist contributions from Genexis / Inteno Group to the work of the FTTH Council. Genexis has been actively contributing to the FTTH Council for more than 15 years, for example in the World of Applications committee, the D&O committee, the IBE committee and the board.
